This being human is about trials and tribulations of being a human. A woman, a daughter, a sister, a physician, a friend. And in this moment in time a single woman, turning forty and all the thoughts and emotions that come with it for me.

Thoughts that I have come to realize are merely the result of how I have learned to look at the world and myself, the result of how I have become conditioned.  And emotions that arise from this learned view and belief.

With this realization has come such an amazing journey in to mindfulness, self reflections and learning that behind every emotion there is wisdom, clarity and joy and the only way to get there is to feel every emotion….. like Rumi says in his poem “This being human is a guest house….”

I decided to share my journey after I came to realize that every time a strong woman I have perhaps thought of as “perfect” has shared with me about her experiences especially her insecure thoughts or emotions and how she strives to “keep it real”, not only have I felt closer to her, but it has helped me feel more “normal”. That I am not alone in my ups and downs.

Thanks for being with me on my journey. I hope that with reading my words, you also realize that you are not alone.

Here is the Rumi poem that is the inspiration for the blog name:

This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they are a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice. Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes. because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

  1. This… is truly brave. Using life’s challenges as oppoturnities for learning, willingness to dissect oneself open and to look at everything, and sharing your vulnerabilities with the rest of us humans… I love it and thank you!

  2. So genuine and heartfelt and beautifully expressed! Loved reading it. Even though our challenges are different but what makes us the same is that we all have challenges that scares us and makes us feel lonely. It’s so heartwarming to know we’re not alone in our journey💖💖💖
